🌿 Platycerium superbum Care Guide
Platycerium superbum, often called the giant staghorn fern, has a growth habit unlike most houseplants. Its broad shield fronds sit against the growing surface while long, branching fronds extend outwards like antlers. It is an epiphytic fern, so it grows naturally on other surfaces rather than relying on a pot full of conventional compost.
☀️ Light
Provide bright, filtered light.
Gentle morning sunshine can be suitable.
Protect the fronds from harsh direct afternoon sun.
💧 Water
If mounted, soak the root ball or mounting medium when it begins to dry, then allow it to drain thoroughly.
If grown in a pot, water when the growing medium is approaching dryness.
Avoid keeping the base permanently wet.
Adjust frequency according to warmth, airflow and the growing medium.
🌫️ Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity.
Good airflow is essential to prevent persistent dampness.
A humidifier can be useful in centrally heated homes.
🍽️ Feeding
Feed sparingly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertiliser.
If mounted, apply the feed carefully to the root area rather than repeatedly soaking the fronds.
Avoid excessive fertiliser, which can damage the roots.
🌱 Quick Tips
Mounting on a suitable board or growing in a specialised epiphyte basket can show off its natural form.
Never remove healthy shield fronds, even when they turn brown.
Avoid cutting the antler-like fronds unnecessarily.
Give it enough space for the mature fronds to spread.
💡 Big Plant Lad Wisdom
This is the sort of plant that makes people ask questions. It doesn't grow like the rest of the collection, and that's precisely why it earns its place. Once you understand its unusual way of living, looking after it becomes part of the enjoyment.🌿✨
