🌿 Peperomia Argyreia Watermelon Care Guide

If someone told you these leaves were designed to look like miniature watermelons, you'd probably believe them! Peperomia argyreia is better known as the Watermelon Peperomia, and its rounded leaves have gorgeous silver and green stripes that really do resemble watermelon skin.

The foliage sits on attractive reddish stems, forming a compact, bushy little plant. It's a member of the Piperaceae family and has slightly fleshy leaves that store some moisture, so it has its own ideas about watering.

☀️ Light

Prefers a well-lit position with bright, filtered light.

An east-facing window is a lovely spot.

Can tolerate some gentle morning sunshine.

Avoid harsh afternoon rays, which can scorch the leaves.

Good light helps maintain those lovely silver markings.

💧 Water

Allow the top few centimetres of soil to dry before watering.

Water thoroughly and allow excess water to drain away.

Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet, as this can quickly lead to rot.

Reduce watering during winter when growth naturally slows.

Avoid leaving water sitting around the base of the plant.

🌫️ Humidity

Happy in average household humidity.

Appreciates a little extra humidity, particularly during warmer weather.

Keep away from radiators and other sources of dry heat.

Good air circulation will help keep the foliage in good condition.

🍽️ Feeding

Feed every 4 weeks during spring and summer.

Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted to half strength.

Peperomias aren't particularly hungry plants, so there's no need to overdo it.

Stop or significantly reduce feeding during winter.

🌱 Quick Tips

Use a free-draining compost with added perlite.

Avoid oversized pots, as the roots prefer a snug home.

Rotate occasionally to encourage even growth.

Handle the leaves carefully as they can mark or bruise.

Don't panic if you spot those unusual little flower spikes appearing!
