🌿 Caladium Care Guide
Caladiums are all about colour. Their paper-thin, heart-shaped leaves are splashed with vibrant shades of pink, white, red and green, making every plant feel like a living painting. They’re wonderfully rewarding during the growing season, producing fresh leaves one after another before taking a well-earned rest as the cooler months arrive. Once you understand their natural rhythm, they’re an absolute joy to grow.
☀️ Light
- Enjoy plenty of bright, filtered light in a warm room.
- Gentle morning sunshine is ideal, but avoid harsh afternoon sun that can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Too little light may cause slower growth and less vibrant colouring.
💧 Water
- Keep the compost lightly moist while the plant is actively growing.
- Water when the surface of the soil begins to dry, avoiding waterlogged conditions.
- As the leaves naturally die back for dormancy, gradually reduce watering until the tuber is resting almost dry.
🌫️ Humidity
- Appreciates moderate to high humidity.
- Higher humidity helps keep the foliage looking fresh and reduces crispy leaf edges.
- Ensure there’s gentle airflow around the plant without exposing it to cold draughts.
🍽️ Feeding
- Feed every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer.
- Stop feeding once the plant begins entering dormancy.
- Resume feeding when fresh shoots emerge from the tuber.
🌱 Quick Tips
- Plant in a loose, well-draining compost that retains a little moisture.
- Keep temperatures consistently warm for the best growth.
- Don’t throw the tuber away if the leaves disappear—Caladiums naturally go dormant.
- Store dormant tubers somewhere dry and frost-free until growth resumes.
- Remove fading leaves to keep the plant looking tidy.
💡 Big Plant Lad Wisdom
Caladiums have a funny way of making you forget they’re even plants. You’ll catch yourself admiring the patterns on the leaves like pieces of artwork, then another leaf appears and suddenly you’ve got a new favourite. 🌿✨
