🌿 Begonia Spirit of Kwale Care Guide
There’s something rather special about Begonia ‘Spirit of Kwale’. Its leaves have a silvery metallic finish, with gorgeous shades of pink, purple and deep burgundy running through the foliage. Each leaf seems to have its own pattern, giving the plant plenty of character.
This is a compact, rhizomatous Rex Begonia, grown primarily for its wonderfully detailed foliage. It makes a lovely addition to a collection where colour and texture are just as important as the plant itself.
☀️ Light
Enjoys a bright position with plenty of filtered natural light.
An east or north-facing window can work particularly well.
Avoid strong direct sunshine, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
Too little light can cause the colours and patterns to become less pronounced.
💧 Water
Keep the soil lightly moist without allowing it to become waterlogged.
Allow the top 1–2cm of compost to dry before watering again.
Water around the edges of the pot, avoiding the leaves and central crown.
Reduce watering during the cooler months when growth slows.
🌫️ Humidity
Appreciates higher humidity, ideally around 50–70%.
Average household humidity can be manageable if conditions are stable.
A humidifier or grouping plants together can help.
Avoid misting the foliage, as moisture sitting on the leaves can encourage spotting and fungal problems.
🍽️ Feeding
Feed every 3–4 weeks during spring and summer.
Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at half strength.
Avoid overfeeding, as Rex Begonias have relatively delicate roots.
Reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
🌱 Quick Tips
Use a light, airy compost mix with plenty of drainage.
Keep away from cold draughts and radiators.
Remove damaged or fading leaves to keep the plant tidy.
A slightly snug pot is preferable to one that's much too large.
Watch for powdery mildew if airflow is poor.
💡 Big Plant Lad Wisdom
This is one of those plants that makes you stop mid-walk around the collection. You go in looking at the plants and somehow end up holding a Begonia you've spent five minutes admiring from every possible angle. 🌿✨
