🌿 Begonia Spiky Nights Care Guide
Now this is a Begonia with a little attitude! Begonia Hovaria ‘Spiky Nights’ has wonderfully unusual foliage, with dark, pointed leaves, jagged edges and deep reddish tones underneath.
As the plant matures, the darker colouring becomes more pronounced, giving it a rather dramatic appearance. Unlike the softer, rounded foliage of some Begonias, this one has a much more textured, spiky silhouette.
It's a foliage-focused variety that appreciates warmth, consistent conditions and a little extra attention to humidity.
☀️ Light
Prefers a bright position with filtered natural light.
Can manage a slightly shadier position, provided there's still enough ambient light.
Avoid direct midday sunshine, which can damage the foliage.
Good lighting helps maintain its deep, rich leaf colouring.
Keep conditions consistent rather than moving it around frequently.
💧 Water
Allow approximately the top third of the soil to dry before watering.
Keep the remaining root zone lightly moist.
Never allow the plant to sit in standing water.
Avoid allowing the soil to dry out completely.
Water around the base, keeping moisture off the leaves and stems where possible.
🌫️ Humidity
Appreciates high humidity, ideally around 60–80%.
A humidifier can make a real difference, particularly in centrally heated homes.
Terrarium-style conditions can work well for smaller plants.
Avoid misting, as droplets sitting on the foliage can encourage spotting.
Maintain good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal problems.
🍽️ Feeding
Feed lightly every 3–4 weeks during active growth.
Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser at a diluted strength.
Avoid feeding a newly arrived or recently acclimatised plant until it is showing healthy new growth.
Reduce the strength and frequency of feeding during winter.
🌱 Quick Tips
Use a fine, airy tropical plant mix with excellent drainage.
Keep temperatures comfortably warm and avoid cold draughts.
Don't rush to remove older leaves unless they are dying or damaged.
Avoid constantly disturbing the roots.
Allow newly acquired plants time to settle before changing their growing conditions.
💡 Big Plant Lad Wisdom
This is definitely not your traditional Begonia. It's got a bit of a gothic side to it! One for the collectors who like their foliage with a little drama. And honestly, those dark leaves are rather hard to walk past. 🌿✨
