🌿 Begonia Barsalouxiae Care Guide
Begonia barsalouxiae is one for the foliage collectors. This rhizomatous Begonia has a wonderfully tactile look, with asymmetrical leaves, softly textured surfaces and rich green to olive-bronze colouring. Its creeping growth habit means it tends to spread rather than shoot upwards, giving it a lovely, relaxed presence in the collection.
☀️ Light
- Give it bright, filtered light rather than strong direct sunshine.
- A well-lit position close to a window works nicely, provided harsh afternoon rays are filtered.
- Too much direct sun can scorch the foliage and affect its rich colouring.
- If growth becomes stretched or the leaves lose their intensity, try moving it a little closer to a good natural light source.
💧 Water
- Allow the upper layer of the soil to dry slightly before watering again.
- When it is time for a drink, water thoroughly and allow the excess to drain away completely.
- Aim for even moisture without waterlogged soil.
- Avoid letting the pot sit in water, as overly wet conditions can quickly cause problems with the roots.
- Pay particular attention during cooler, darker periods when the plant may use water more slowly.
🌫️ Humidity
- This Begonia appreciates moderate to high humidity, particularly when actively growing.
- Good airflow is just as important as humidity, especially around its textured foliage.
- Keep it away from radiators, heaters and cold draughts.
- Avoid routinely misting the leaves. Their textured surface can hold moisture, which isn’t ideal when air circulation is limited.
🍽️ Feeding
- Feed during spring and summer when the plant is actively producing new growth.
- Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser diluted according to the product instructions.
- Feeding roughly every 3–4 weeks is a sensible starting point during active growth.
- Reduce feeding when growth naturally slows through the cooler months.
- Fresh compost provides nutrients too, so there is no need to compensate with heavy feeding.
🌱 Quick Tips
- Give the rhizome room to develop rather than burying it deeply.
- Choose an airy, free-draining soil that retains some moisture without becoming heavy and wet.
- Keep an eye on the leaves — curling, crispy edges or yellowing can be useful clues that something in the environment needs adjusting.
- Don’t be tempted to keep the plant permanently enclosed simply because it enjoys humidity; air movement matters.
- Check the foliage regularly for pests, particularly when the plant is kept warm.
- Its creeping habit makes it particularly interesting as it matures, so don’t be too quick to tidy away those spreading stems.
💡 Big Plant Lad Wisdom
Oh, this is one of those Begonias where you catch yourself running a finger over the leaf and thinking, “Look at the texture on that!” Give it a little time to settle in and it becomes one of those plants you keep checking on purely because you want to see what it’s doing next. 🌿✨
