🌿 Adenium Baobabs Care Guide

Adenium Baobabs have that wonderfully strange, sculptural look that makes you stop and have a proper look at them. Their swollen caudex stores water, giving the plant its chunky, characterful shape, while the foliage appears seasonally around the growing period.

They’re much more about restraint than fussing. Give them plenty of light, let the growing medium dry properly, and resist the temptation to water just because the caudex looks thirsty.

☀️ Light

• Give your Adenium Baobab plenty of bright natural light.
• A sunny windowsill is ideal, and it can handle several hours of direct sunshine once acclimated.
• Gentle morning or late afternoon sun is particularly useful indoors.
• During darker UK months, supplementing with a grow light can help maintain stronger growth.
• Avoid suddenly moving a plant from a dim position into intense midday sun, as the foliage can scorch.

💧 Water

• Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry out well before watering again.
• The caudex stores water, so this plant is far happier being slightly too dry than constantly wet.
• Reduce watering considerably through autumn and winter, especially if the plant is dropping its leaves or becoming dormant.
• Always check the soil before reaching for the watering can.
• Never leave the pot sitting in excess water.

• Average household humidity is generally absolutely fine.
• There’s no need to create a humid jungle around your Adenium Baobab.
• Good airflow is more important than keeping humidity especially high.
• Avoid placing it somewhere damp and poorly ventilated.

🍽️ Feeding

• Feed during the active growing season with a balanced fertiliser diluted according to the product instructions.
• A feed every few weeks during active growth is usually plenty.
• Stop or greatly reduce feeding when the plant enters its quieter period.
• Never fertilise completely dry soil; water first if the plant needs it.

• Use a very free-draining, gritty growing medium.
• Make sure the pot has excellent drainage.
• Keep the caudex above the soil rather than burying it deeply.
• Rotate the plant occasionally so growth remains balanced.
• Expect seasonal changes — leaf drop during a dormant period isn’t automatically a problem.
• Keep it somewhere warm and bright during active growth.
• Be patient after moving or repotting; Adeniums can take their time before showing new growth.
